The Stone Story
The mineral behind the mat, and why we shaped a home around it.
Trivelle began with a small frustration. A damp towel by the sink. A bath mat that never quite dried. We went looking for a calmer way to keep a home dry, and found it in stone. Diatomaceous stone draws water in on contact and lets it go back to the air, no fabric, no fans, no laundry. Everything we make starts there.
Made to sit quietly in a beautiful room.
What diatomaceous stone really is
Diatomaceous stone, or diatomite, is made from the fossilised shells of diatoms, microscopic algae that settled on ancient lake beds. Pressed into stone over millions of years, it keeps millions of tiny pores. Those pores pull water off the surface in seconds and let it evaporate. The finish stays naturally matte and never feels plastic.
Water disappears off the surface almost on contact.
A grounded, mineral finish that holds its footing.
It dries itself between uses, so nothing sits damp.
From quarried mineral to a refined slab
Nothing here is complicated. The honesty is the point: a natural mineral, shaped with care, finished to a soft matte that feels good underhand.
-
1
Quarried
Natural diatomite is drawn from mineral-rich deposits, not manufactured.
-
2
Pressed
The mineral is shaped and pressed into a clean, refined slab.
-
3
Finished
A soft matte surface is brought up by hand, so it feels good underfoot and underhand.
It changes the small moments
Set a wet glass on the kitchen mat and the ring is gone before you turn around. Step out of the shower and the floor stays dry under your feet. The mat does its work and then disappears into the room, which is exactly how a good object should behave.
- The kitchen counter stays clear and dry.
- The bathroom floor stays dry underfoot.
- No damp fabric, no mat to launder.
