The Stone Story

The mineral behind the mat, and why we shaped a home around it.

A diatomaceous stone mat resting beside a calm bathtub
Everyday objects. Elevated.

Trivelle began with a small frustration. A damp towel by the sink. A bath mat that never quite dried. We went looking for a calmer way to keep a home dry, and found it in stone. Diatomaceous stone draws water in on contact and lets it go back to the air, no fabric, no fans, no laundry. Everything we make starts there.

Made to sit quietly in a beautiful room.

The mineral

What diatomaceous stone really is

Diatomaceous stone, or diatomite, is a soft, naturally occurring rock made almost entirely from the fossilized remains of diatoms — microscopic single-celled algae that once lived in ancient lakes and seas. Each diatom built itself an intricate shell out of silica, and as countless generations settled to the bottom over millions of years, those shells accumulated and compacted into stone. What makes diatomite special is that it holds on to that structure: the rock is riddled with millions of microscopic pores, which is why it is so light and so thirsty. Touch a wet surface to it and capillary action draws the water down into those pores in seconds; the same open structure then lets that moisture evaporate back into the air, so the stone effectively dries itself between uses. That porous silica is exactly why the very same mineral is used far beyond the home — as a filtration medium for water, pools, and beverages, as a gentle mild abrasive, and as an absorbent in industry. In a mat, it means a naturally matte, mineral surface that pulls water away fast and never feels like plastic.

It dries itself between uses, so nothing sits damp.

The craft

From quarried mineral to a refined slab

Nothing here is complicated, and that is the point. Diatomite is quarried as a natural mineral, not synthesized in a lab, then shaped and finished into a clean slab whose porous structure does the work. The honesty is the appeal: a natural mineral, shaped with care, finished to a soft matte that feels good underhand.

  1. 1

    Quarried

Natural diatomite is drawn from mineral-rich deposits, not manufactured.

  2. 2

    Pressed

The mineral is shaped and pressed into a clean, refined slab.

  3. 3

    Finished

A soft matte surface is brought up by hand, so it feels good underfoot and underhand.

A clear kitchen counter and a dry bathroom floor in daily use
The difference

It changes the small moments

Set a wet glass on the kitchen mat and the ring is gone before you turn around. Step out of the shower and the floor stays dry under your feet. The mat does its work and then disappears into the room, which is exactly how a good object should behave.

  • The kitchen counter stays clear and dry.
  • The bathroom floor stays dry underfoot.
  • No damp fabric, no mat to launder.
